Presented to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the Great War, this new stage version of Pat Barker’s 1991 Booker-nominated novel has been adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent In Brixton). Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon finds himself institutionalised in Scotland’s Craiglockhart War Hospital by a government board eager to discredit him following his public disapproval of the war. There, he is treated for shell-shock by army psychiatrist Dr William Rivers. Initially uneasy with the thought that he’s sheltering a conscientious objector, Rivers nonetheless soon finds himself engaged in a battle with his own conscience...
