A new Alan Bennett play is always a theatrical experience worth waiting for, particularly when it’s earned rave reviews at the National Theatre. Bennett’s latest offering is just such a play, having pretty much garnered plaudits across the board courtesy of its London run. Described by the man himself as “a play for England, sort of”, People focuses on the relationship between two sisters. One, an impecunious aristocrat named Dorothy Stacpoole, is eager to make a killing by selling the dilapidated stately home in which she lives. The other, a bossy archdeacon, is in favour of handing the rambling pile over to the National Trust. What follows between them is an example of Bennett at his near-best, and makes for an evening of theatre that manages to be provocative, touching and outrageous all at the same time.

Alan Bennett's People shows at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from Tues 3 to Sat 21 September. We've joined with the Birmingham Rep to offer What's On Live readers the chance to win one of two pairs of tickets to the 7.30pm performance on Thurs 19 September
