Tartuffe is not only beguiling but penniless. Man-of-property Orgon takes him into his house, believing him a paragon of virtue. He then orders his daughter to reject her fiancé and marry Tartuffe instead. When Orgon's son attempts to avert the marriage, he is disinherited by his angry father, who instead makes Tartuffe his heir. But is this intriguing visitor all that he seems?... Moliere’s famous comedy was first performed in 1664, its reputation being wildly enhanced by the Archbishop of Paris’s issuing of an edict which threatened excommunication for anyone who watched, performed in, or even read the play, so offensive to the church did he deem the work to be. Local lad and Harry Potter, Fast Show and Father Brown star Mark Williams takes on the lead role.
Tartuffe shows at Birmingham's Repertory Theatre from Fri 1 to Sat 16 November. We've joined with the theatre to offer readers the chance to win one of three pairs of tickets to see Tartuffe on Thurs 14 November at 7.30pm
Closing date for entries: 04 November 2013
