ER Braithwaite’s novel is best known from its 1967 film version, which saw Hollywood heavyweight Sidney Poitier crossing the Atlantic to star as a black rookie teacher trying to make a difference in a rough East End school. Lulu co-starred as one of the students, and enjoyed a massive hit with the movie’s title track. The film version had a real Swinging London feel about it; by contrast, this new stage adaptation has been set in the austere post-war period of the late-1940s, and is suitably peppered with songs and dance from the era. Matthew Kelly stars.
