Located alongside Birmingham’s canal in the former headquarters of the Birmingham Canal Company on Gas Street. The magnificent, Grade II listed building has been restored to its former glory and is now home to the fabulous French bistro. Whilst still retaining the period features, exposed brickwork and character of the Grade Iisted building the restaurant opened on Friday, 1st July offering provincial French bistrot dishes.

More than 150 years ago, boats passed underneath the building carrying materials such as coal into the city, canal network tolls were taken from the boats within the buildings vaults, which were eventually bricked up in the 1970s. The historic features that remain in this two floor restaurant include the archway – where thousands of boats passed – and has now been re-opened with a glass front so passers-by can see the bistrots wine cellar located.

There is also a wrought iron staircase and brass handle door, ornately engraved with the number 46, the original sash windows and the tiny doors. The large safe which held all the canal toll money in the 1860s has been renovated into a cosy dining alcove on the second floor. The buildings courtyard has been refurbished to create additional outdoor seating and a two-storey glazed extension creates additional seating with canal views.

Their ‘raison d’être’ is great value French cooking and seasonal menus. They like to combine French bistrot classics such as steak-frites, boeuf bourguignon and tarte au citron with their own take on regional favourites like tarte flambée, Bouillabaisse and paté de campagne. Their relaxed and friendly bistrots are the place to go for any occasion.
