Exhibition: Thirty-Six

Thirty-Six is the first solo exhibition of Birmingham-based multidisciplinary artist Marley Starskey Butler, whose lived experience of social work, and becoming a social worker later in life, informs the show.      Featuring photography, video, audio and text, the exhibition sees Marley bringing together artworks made between 2009 and the present day. The included pieces range from explorations of the artist’s own children’s services records, to considering what it means to assess somebody else’s capacity to safeguard and care for a child.
Thirty-Six’s main themes revolve around family, empathy, trauma, identity and understanding. The exhibition culminates in a free-to-attend Artist Talk event in MAC’s Hexagon Theatre on Thursday 18 January, during which Marley and curator Roma Piotrowska will discuss the artist’s creative process and the works in the exhibition.
