Symphonic Aspects of America
Featuring Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra
Opera inspired by women travelling from the West Indes to the UK.
The experiences of women who travelled to the UK from the West Indies between the 1940s and 1960s provides the subject matter for this celebratory opera, a stage reimagining of Shirley J Thompson’s 1992 film, Memories In Mind: Women Of The Windrush Tell Their Stories.
Birmingham-based soprano Abigail Kelly leads the production, which brings together ‘mesmerising’ music with ‘seamlessly woven’ archival and film footage.
The opera visits Birmingham as part of a UK tour marking 75 years since the arrival in Britain of the Empire Windrush. The ship brought with it more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean, people who had travelled across the world to help rebuild Britain following the Second World War.
