Visitors and history buffs alike are invited to enjoy a week-long celebration of the extraordinary life of Henry VIII’s sixth wife and English Queen, Katherine Parr at Sudeley Castle this September.
From Monday 1 to Sunday 7 of September, visitors will be taken back in time with historic reenactors, bringing Katherine’s scholarly and courageous story vividly to life through captivating performances and period costume. Expert-led talks and a specially curated trail will guide visitors through key moments of her remarkable journey from royal court to quiet reflection.
Talks in the church will be taking place Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 11.30am and 2.30pm and on Thursday at 2.30pm. On the Sunday, Past Times will be performing a reenactment in the church at 12.30pm and 2.30pm, as well as walking the grounds for meet and greets.
Katherine Parr is famously the only queen to survive Henry VIII, and the only one to be buried on private land, in Sudeley Castle’s, St Marys Chapel. Clues to her life, loves and lasting achievements are woven throughout the castle grounds: from the tranquil gardens she once walked, to the exhibition spaces filled with rare artefacts, and the hallowed Chapel where she lies in rest.
During the weeklong celebration, anyone named Catherine or Katherine (spelled with a C or a K) are invited to enjoy free entry each day, to celebrate the life and legacy of England’s last Tudor queen - welcoming her namesakes to walk in her footsteps. Visitors are just asked to show valid photo ID and enjoy a truly regal experience.
Katherine Parr was a woman of grace and diplomacy and a pioneer of female leadership. While Henry VIII waged war in France, Katherine served as Regent-General taking an active role in decision making. She also helped reconcile Henry with his two daughters, Mary (the future Mary I) and Elizabeth (the future Elizabeth I) who would go on to model her Queenship on Katherine.
Visitors can also enjoy Sudeley’s brand-new Annual Pass, offering unlimited visits within the visitor season, golden hour access and special events, plus the opportunity to bring a friend for free. Starting at £35 for a Child Pass and valid for 12 months, an Annual Pass offers excellent value. A special Local Annual Pass will also be launching exclusively for all GL54 neighbours in Winchcombe, starting at just £17.50 for a Child Pass.
