Birmingham’s food and drink scene is about to welcome a major new player.
Society, the highly anticipated 9,000 sq ft food hall, will officially open its doors in One Colmore Square on Friday 5 September, bringing together five independent kitchens, Society taproom, and a dedicated cocktail bar in one vibrant, design-led space.
The Society bar will be the centrepiece within the space, and guests can expect to see a curated beer and cider collection encompassing the best that Birmingham, the UK and further afield has to offer.
To celebrate the launch and commemorate their new home in Birmingham, Society has commissioned a major new artwork from Cold War Steve, one of Birmingham’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Known for his satirical, surrealist photo montages that reflect modern British life, Cold War Steve (real name Christopher Spencer) has created a bespoke mural that will be permanently displayed at the heart of the venue.
The mural is set against a black-and-white photograph of 1960s Birmingham and bursts with colour and energy, symbolising the multicultural spirit and creative force that define the city today. It features iconic figures from Birmingham’s globally recognised music scene - including Mist, Fleur Shore, Dapz on the Map, Lotto Boyzz, Mike Skinner, Preditah, Lady Leshurr and Jaykae - representing genres from bhangra and grime to techno, rap and drum & bass. In his signature style, Cold War Steve has also woven in his trademark wit and social commentary, giving the piece both a local heartbeat and a sharp cultural edge.
More than just a food hall, Society Birmingham will act as a cultural hub for the city’s business district. From weekday lunch breaks and post-work drinks to weekend feasting, it offers a new way to experience the best of Birmingham’s independent scene all under one roof.
The Cold War Steve mural will be unveiled to the public on Friday 5 September to coincide with Society Birmingham’s official launch. For more information and updates, visit: instagram.com/society.brum
