Coventry and Birmingham have both formally submitted a bid to bring Channel 4 to the West Midlands.

As part of the ‘4 All the UK’ strategy, Channel 4 want to exist in three locations outside London – one of which will become their headquarters. Coventry City Council believes that their city could house one of the buildings, with Friargate being the most suitable option at present.

Coventry and Birmingham, like the other contenders, have been given the chance to pitch to Channel 4 bosses that their town/city has enough room, is a great location and has the culture and diversity required to remain at the forefront of UK media.

The shortlist will be released at the end of May, followed by the final decision later in the year. The move is expected to happen in early 2019.

The title of UK City of Culture 2021 will definitely stand Coventry in good stead and will help grow the city further over the coming years.

The West Midlands is the most diverse county in the UK with 47% BAME population in Birmingham and 34% in Coventry. This draws parallels with the company’s mission statement.

The region has an innumerable amounts of reasons why the channel should base itself here so the final decision will be eagerly anticipated.
