Cornish shanty group Fisherman's Friends will return to Birmingham next year as part of their Rock The Boat tour.
It's ten years since The Fisherman’s Friends signed a million-pound record deal that saw their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends go gold, resulting in them becoming the first ever traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album.
A film (and sequel) telling the story of the original Cornish 'buoy band' has ensured their tale is known around the world. Bound by shared experience, for more than 30 years they have gathered on the Platt on the harbour in their native Port Isaac to sing the songs of the sea, songs that in some cases have been handed down for hundreds of years, songs that connect them to generations of Cornish fishermen that have come before them.
The group comprises Jeremy Brown( lobster fisherman), Jon Cleave (writer and shopkeeper) John ‘Lefty’ Lethbridge (smallholder and engineer), John McDonnell (builder), Jason Nicholas (lobster fisherman) Toby Lobb (filmaker) and Bill Hawkins (potter). As The Fisherman's Friends they will play Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Thursday 5 September, 2024.
