A Smurftastic art takeover has been launched across Birmingham in celebration of Paramount Pictures’ upcoming film, Smurfs, featuring an all-star voice cast including Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Xolo Maridueña Rylan Clark, Giovanna Fletcher, Jon Richardson with Kurt Russell and John Goodman.

The city-wide takeover consists of 8 artworks featuring Smurfs for every personality. Each work has been created by the female artist group, WOM Collective, a grassroots collective passionate about inspiring and empowering each other and their communities.

As the Smurfs’ adventure takes them to the real world in the new film, the mini murals bring the Smurfs to the streets of Birmingham, causing mischief and chaos all around the city with each unique design interacting with the location it is in. It’s a free, accessible way for those out and about in the sunshine to get in on the Smurf-ful antics too, with a Smurf for everyone around every corner.

Just beyond the city, Smurfette, voiced by global superstar Rihanna, will oversee all the excitement at the NEC Arena, where Rihanna herself played back in 2011. It’s a full-circle moment that blends nostalgia with star power.

It’ll be blue on blue as Papa Smurf and Hefty Smurf will be cheering with the Blues at Birmingham City F.C.

As expected, Brainy Smurf found his way to ThinkTank Birmingham Science Museum to perhaps teach visitors another thing or two!

Bursting on to the scene at Brindleyplace is Grouchy Smurf scooting past the canal.

The artworks were designed by Lours, a founding member of the collective and multifaceted artist with roots in muralism. Four members of the collective were involved in the creation of the murals. Elno, another founder of the collective, is a Spanish artist whose work covers a broad range of artistic styles and techniques; the duo have been supported by Ly, and Lucy Danielle, who is from the West Midlands.

Catch the art on display in Birmingham for a limited time this Summer. Smurfs releases in UK cinemas on July 18.
