The freehold of this one-time town hall was purchased from Birmingham City Council in 1997, a move which saw Sutton Arts Theatre (SAT) taking a significant step towards securing its own long-term future. SAT was formed after the Second World War as a result of the Libraries and Arts committees of Sutton inviting representatives of local dramatic societies to form a central body.
