Founded in 1980 by celebrated Austrian dancer Peter Malleck, the now-UK-based Vienna Festival Ballet presents a repertoire which comprises both full-length classics and new commissions. Touring extensively for two-thirds of the year, the company this month visits the Midlands with its production of Giselle, a surreal ballet which tells the story of a girl who kills herself when she finds out that her suitor, Loys, has kept his real identity from her - pretending to be a peasant when actually he's a member of the aristocracy. Loys, whose real name is Albrecht, and another suitor, Hilarion, who had jealously told Giselle of Albrecht's deception, visit Giselle's unconsecrated grave. There, they find themselves in all manner of trouble due to the presence of the Wilis - ghosts of girls jilted by their lovers. It falls to the spirit of Giselle to try and save her suitors from beyond the grave...
