Situated on the main road through to Church Stretton, The Pound Inn is housed in a beautiful fifteenth century building in Leebotwood, the lovely thatched roof of which makes it unmissable.

Run by Michelin-star chef John Williams and his wife Debbie, who previously owned Sol restaurant in Shrewsbury town centre, its interior is warm and comfortable, with all the smells of an open fire and fresh cooking to welcome you in. Although the menu boasts a selection of very tantalizing starters, my partner has a penchant for sharing platters and was hell-bent on trying the homemade bread and cured meats - an excellent choice, as it turned out. The mains menu offers something for everyone - satisfying the hungry diner's desire for meaty nosh in the shape of burgers and fish & chips, and also making provision for the more adventurous patron. We settled on the homemade beefburger with grilled smokey bacon, green chilli cheese, and onion mayo, and a twenty-eight-day rare breed Sirloin Steak. Both dishes were decent portions, and according to my partner included the best chips he'd ever tasted. It was evident that John is very selective about the ingredients he cooks with, and the cut of beef was melt-in-the-mouth and cooked to perfection.

As I often find is the case with good restaurants, I ended up wishing I'd tried something a little more adventurous, simply because the steak was so good. A definite motivation to return for Round Two! The only downside to the menu was that there weren't any vegetarian options to choose from. If you eat meat or fish, then you're in heaven, but vegetarians or vegans will go hungry. In terms of service, it was quick and efficient, though I wasn't asked how I would like my steak cooked or given an option as to which sauce I wanted (there was a choice of three). Overall, if you're travelling through Leebotwood, The Pound Inn is well worth stopping off at. If you're based in Shrewsbury, then the food is well worth a drive out. The Pound also caters for weddings, events and corporate meetings, and is hopefully doing a taster menu and chef's table (fingers crossed!)
