Lichfield Cathedral is once again hosting its award-winning light & sound show this Christmas - albeit in a different format, to ensure that it’s a Covid-secure experience for everybody to enjoy.

The Cathedral Illuminated 2020: The Manger is being presented from 16 to 22 December, with special earlier showings each evening from 5pm onwards.

This year the event will take place completely outside, with a safe one-way route created around the Close and a significantly reduced number of time-slots per evening. The spectacular illumination will be viewed facing the front of the cathedral, where there’s ample room for people to enjoy the show whilst remaining safe and socially distanced from other households.

The illuminations kick off with a special piece to mark the 150th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. A light & sound celebration of ‘everything Christmassy’ follows. Proceedings are then brought to a close with a visual retelling of the Christmas story, using footage of the inside of the cathedral as a backdrop to the narrative.

Commenting on this year’s presentation, Peter Walker, a member of artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, which creates the light & sound show, said: “Christmas wouldn’t be the same in Lichfield without The Cathedral Illuminated. Families from far and wide have made it part of their Christmas tradition, and we felt it was important to rework the illuminations for our current situation. We’ve been working closely with the cathedral over the last few months to create a truly festive experience that’s safe for people to attend. We’ve incorporated some really beautiful imagery into the projection on the front of the cathedral to create a special moment for everyone who visits.”

Tickets for The Cathedral Illuminated - £5.50 for adults, £4 for children (under-fives go free) and £16 for a family - are available at:
