Ahead of the the UN World Day of Social Justice on Monday 20 February, Kenilworth is set to celebrate diversity this weekend with activities themed around the national One Day Without Us campaign. On Saturday 18 February, enthusiastic volunteers will bring activities, performances and information to the Talisman Shopping Centre.

Hailing from Germany, France and Spain as well as the UK, volunteers in Kenilworth hope to raise awareness about the countrywide peace-promoting project, as well as highlighting the many contributions of migrants to British society.

Activities will include flag-themed face painting and the chance to make your mark on a world map to show where you, your ancestors and friends and neighbours come from. Throughout the day, there'll be live music from Coventry duo Monkey Whispers, Kenilworth Books will be setting up a display of writing by migrant authors, and Treehouse Bookshop will be serving as a friendly meeting place for the community to come together. Literature explaining the even and dispelling myths and misinformation about migrants will also be available from volunteers at a stand inside the shopping centre.

Claire Stern, one of the organisers of the event, said: “We’re really looking forward to spending the day engaging with local people and talking about the fact that we are a diverse nation. We want a public celebration to show that we are better together and to recognise the contribution migrants make to British society.”

Dorothea Schaefer, who is also among the volunteers running the event, added: “This day is all about positivity and peace. It is an event for everyone, whether you are born in the UK or outside it, whether you are descended from immigrants or not. We’re here to highlight the huge, positive impact migrants have on our country and promote solidarity in the community.”
