Celebrated pianist, Peter Donohoe CBE, patron of the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra, will be joining them to play Brahms’ much loved 2nd Piano Concerto in B flat major at the orchestra’s first concert of the 2019-2020 season at Warwick Hall, Warwick School, on Saturday 12 October, 7.30pm.
Conducted by Roger Coull, the musicians of the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra will also be performing the overture to The Flying Dutchman by Wagner and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor.
Peter Donohoe has built an extraordinary world-wide career since coming to prominence at the 1982 International Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow, encompassing a huge repertoire and performing with major orchestras and conductors across the world. He is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique.
In addition to being patron of the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra, he is vice-president of the Birmingham Conservatoire and was awarded a C.B.E. for services to music in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List.
Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto is one of the longest ever written, lasting 50 minutes, and culminates in a thrilling, energetic, finale. The Flying Dutchman was one of Wagner’s earliest operas and the overture is an orchestral favourite. The orchestra will then turn to the Belgian-French composer Cesar Franck for a symphony with compelling dramatic effects and overwhelming emotional strength.
Raymond Joyce, Chair of WSO and principal horn player said, ‘We are delighted to welcome back Peter Donohoe to play the Brahms concerto with us, the very piece that he played at his first concert with the orchestra, 40 years ago.’
