A celebration of Black Country creativity is heading to Wolverhampton’s Arena Theatre this autumn as Alternative Black Country brings together a host of acclaimed regional artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers for a one-day event.

Taking place on Saturday 7 November, the programme will showcase a mix of readings, live music, film screenings, discussion and performance, highlighting the work of creatives whose roots are firmly connected to the Black Country.

Among those taking part are award-winning writers Kerry Hadley-Pryce and RM Francis, photographer and filmmaker Tom Hicks of Black Country Type, ambient musician The Balloonist, documentary filmmaker Dan Watts, and experimental audio-visual project Hidden Britain.

The event will also feature a discussion led by Walkspace, a collective exploring the region through photography and walking, while Ian Francis, founder of Flatpack Festival, will discuss Archie Hill Comes Home and its portrayal of a changing Black Country landscape.

Music performances come from The Balloonist and MENOWTHERETHEN, with drummer and artist Fliss Kitson closing the day with a DJ set. Hosting the event will be filmmaker, podcaster and presenter Mark Cartwright.

Running from 2pm to 10pm, Alternative Black Country aims to explore the stories, landscapes, memories and culture that continue to shape the region through a diverse programme of contemporary creative work.
