Birmingham-based DanceXchange’s online version of Dance Insights - a curated programme of performances, events, conversation and artistic inspiration - continues this week with a focus on the organisation’s 2020 Artist In Residence, Jamaal Burkmar.

Each Dance Insights programme is online for two weeks and offers audiences an insight into the process and mind of the creator.

Lucie Mirkova, Head of Artistic Programmes at DanceXchange said: “In these challenging times, when our arts venues and studios are closed, we are keen to find ways to continue the rich dialogue between artists and audience.

“Dance Insights Online offers a fascinating exploration of what inspires and interests the talented choreographers in Dance Xchange’s Artists In Residence programme - an exclusive and unique opportunity to connect to the world of dance.”

Jamaal Burkmar’s programme is available to enjoy from Monday 11 to Sunday 24 May and offers a unique insight into his creative inspiration.

In the first week Jamaal will be sharing a series of films and music, plus a presentation of his own work, Volume 1.

Speaking about the piece, Jamaal says: “Volume 1 is a work about my home and my family. It’s about the music of black origin and how that inspired me to become a dancer. It’s about taking the feeling of listening to D’angelo in the car on long journeys or trying to teach my dad to dance to hip-hop with my siblings on holiday in Italy. The whole work takes these personal memories and squashes them into a soundtrack that inspires the restoration of these images into an abstract piece.”

In week two, find out how Jamaal is spending lockdown, as he takes over DanceXchange’s Instagram to host an online discussion with his sister, singer-songwriter Mahalia Burkmar, and brother Zane Burkmar, an actor, writer, performer and rapper.

Jamaal’s programme will end with a sharing of his latest Jukebox film, set to the music of Luther Vandross. To find out more, click here
