The Bodyguard The Musical opened at the Regent Theatre in the Potteries last night and what a dynamic and emotional rollercoaster of a show it is.

Based on the iconic film of the same name starring Whitney Houston, The Bodyguard The Musical pays tribute to the core theme of the film but also creatively merges additional narrative with a contemporary twist. This ensures that the storyline is relevant and fresh to current audiences.

Sidonie Smith plays the title role of Rachel Marron - the stratospheric superstar in need of a bodyguard. Smith's portrayal is both vibrant and emotive as she delivers fabulous vocals, great dance moves and engaging acting. She also has a genuine rapport with her leading man Adam Garcia who plays Frank Farmer. Garcia is outstanding as the plain talking bodyguard with a compassionate heart and steely determination to protect his client.

Although essentially a love story, The Bodyguard does have an underlying subtext about a singer being stalked by a mentally unbalanced fan, with content that sometimes shocks and surprised, That said, the show has plenty of sweet and tender discourse and fun elements.

The musical repertoire of Houston is simply stunning as the show pays homage to her brilliance with a succession of hits. The choreography is both exciting and impressive, and the dance ensemble really do deserve a big shout out - as does choreographer Karen Bruce.

The focus on the pressures of fame, the sweet interaction of mother and son, and the emotional pain of sibling rivalry also loom large throughout which provides all round entertainment - and a feast for both fans of Whitney and those who may not know her music at all.

A wonderful performance was also given by Sasha Monique who plays Nicki Marron, Rachel’s sister.  Monique's exquisite voice and her portrayal as the tragic sister was both memorable and emotional.  Cale Cole who plays Marron’s son Fletcher truly deserves a mention too. Cole is super talented as an actor, singer and dancer and at just ten years old, is a joy to watch. A star in the making!

Four stars.
