The Smethwick Puppetry Festival will return in February 2027, with organisers promising another celebration of puppetry, creativity and community across the town.

Black Country Touring has confirmed that the festival will take place from 13 to 21 February 2027 during the school half-term break, with applications now open for artists and theatre companies wishing to take part. The festival is inviting submissions for its main programme, a scratch night for new and developing work, and an exhibition commission.

The event has become a popular fixture on the local cultural calendar since its launch in 2024. The inaugural festival featured family-friendly puppet shows, performances for adults, workshops and exhibitions across seven community venues in Smethwick, attracting more than 1,000 visitors.

Since then, the festival has continued to grow, expanding its programme and venue network while maintaining its commitment to accessibility through free and “pay what you can” events. Previous editions have featured performances from leading puppetry companies, hands-on workshops and exhibitions designed to engage audiences of all ages.

Black Country Touring said the open application process for 2027 is designed to welcome both returning artists and those new to the festival. Organisers are encouraging companies with ready-to-tour puppetry productions, artists developing new work and creatives interested in curating an accompanying exhibition to apply.

Applications for the 2027 programme close on 31 July 2026, find out more at bctouring.org.uk/puppet.
