A ‘Woman of War’ silhouette has been unveiled in Sedgley, as part of a remembrance ceremony.

Sedgley Townswomen's Guild has commissioned two new pieces in recognition of women who volunteered, served and worked during the war effort.

The short ceremony took place at Sedgley War Memorial at 10.30am. Led by Rev Cooksey, it included readings and song from local community groups as well as children from Queen Victoria school.

More than 200 knitted and crocheted poppies are on display at the memorial, these have been created by hand by members of the Sedgley Townswomen's Guild as well as their friends and relatives.

Karen Moore, Sedgley Townswomen's Guild, said:

“Sedgley has had a Tommy silhouette, in recognition of soldiers who paid the ultimate price for our borough and country, at the memorial for many years.

“As a women’s group, we also wanted to get female silhouettes to remember the astounding efforts and sacrifices that women made during wartime, and I am delighted to see them going on display this weekend.”

Councillor Damian Corfield, Dudley Council’s champion for Armed Forces, said:

“It is fantastic to see these two silhouettes being installed at the Sedgley War Memorial ahead of tomorrow’s community ceremony.

“Over the coming days, we will all take time to remember and honour the women and men who made huge sacrifices for our freedom.”

Knitted poppy displays from local townswomen's guild groups can also be seen at War Memorials in Coseley, Woodsetton and Lower Gornal.
