A year-long programme of events is being launched to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve and its internationally important geology, wildlife and mining heritage.

The celebrations begin on Saturday 3 October with a launch event at Dudley Archives and Local History Centre, featuring speakers from the scientific community and the premiere of The Dudley Bug, a new animated film by local filmmaker Leo Wright.

Visitors will also get a first look at proposals for a new visitor facility and wardens’ base at the reserve. Plans include accessible toilets, educational and exhibition space, a reception area and improved facilities for visitors, volunteers and students. A planning application has been submitted by Dudley Council, supported by the Friends of Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve.

Wren’s Nest became the UK’s first National Nature Reserve designated specifically for its geological importance in 1956. Today, it remains one of the world’s most significant geological sites and forms a key part of the Black Country UNESCO Global Geopark.

The anniversary programme, coordinated by the Friends of Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve, will include walks, exhibitions, educational activities and community events throughout the year.
