The Hippodrome is hosting a series of events to celebrate its heritage as part of its 120th birthday. From exhibitions and a giant playbill to tours and a talk on how people power has changed the building itself.

Sat 14th Sept
Exhibition Launch - Two heritage-focused exhibitions in the foyer galleries about the history of black performance at Hippodrome, the Nightingale club in Thorp St and the links between the local Chinese community and our theatre.

Mon 16th - Sat 21st Sept, 10:00am-6:00pm
Pop-Up Exhibition – The Atrium space will be populated with easels displaying key images from the Hippodrome's history.

Thu 19th - Fri 20th Sept, 11:00am-12:00pm
Coffee mornings – Chat to a volunteer and see some of the archive on display. The chat will be very informal, so you can ask lots of questions about all areas of the Hippodrome's 120-year history.

Fri 20th - Sat 21st Sept, 10:30am and 11:00am
Taster Tours – These mini 30-minute tours will give you an insight into the theatre spaces including the auditorium and Royal box. You will also be shown around the newly installed exhibitions, which reflect the Hippodrome’s past.

Thu 19th - Sat 21st Sept, 10:00am-6:00pm
Giant Playbill – Specially commissioned for the 120th birthday, this installation will be something to behold. At approx. 10m tall and hanging in the main foyer space, the piece will reflect the playbills that used to hang outside the entrance during the early 1900s.

Sat 21st Sept, 12:00pm-2:00pm
Talk & Quiz – Volunteer, Ivan Heard, will give a talk on how people have influenced the building’s structure over time. This will be followed by a theatre history quiz, where the winning team will win two tickets to a show of your choice!
