Birmingham’s new indie-rock heroes The Clause have catapulted straight to number one on the Official Independent Albums Chart with their debut album Victim of a Casual Thing.
What’s more, they’ve also crashed in at number 19 on the UK Official Albums Chart - a breakthrough that’s all the more remarkable given that they’ve achieved all of this entirely independently.
In a week that they have described as “the best of our lives,” The Clause had fulfilled a life-long ambition simply by releasing the album. What happened next was bigger than they had hoped - the album infiltrated the midweeks at number as they outsold Sabrina Carpenter and their record store tour has been greeted with sell-out crowds and big emotions.
And now they’re at number one on the Official Independent Albums Chart, look at the level of artists they stand alongside - recent weeks have seen the likes of Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C., Pulp, CMAT, Richard Ashcroft and Sam Ryder all top the chart.
The Clause’s overnight success is the peak of more than a decade’s work. Together with bandmates and old school friends Liam Deakin (guitar), Jonny Fyffe (bass) and Niall Fennell (drums), they’ve battled the odds, overcome setbacks and defied anyone who said it couldn’t be done. Now imagine the possibilities that await when it’s time to turn their attention to their second album…
In the shorter term however, The Clause are back on the road next month. Their upcoming UK headline tour culminates with their biggest headline show to date with a homecoming at the 3000-capacity Birmingham O2 Academy - limited tickets for the tour are available here.
