Telford & Wrekin Council, in partnership with Telford and Wrekin Interfaith Council, Telford African and Afro-Caribbean Resource Centre and the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust is inviting residents to a range of events to commemorate Windrush Day.
This day marks the significant arrival of the MV Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948, an event that marked the start of a new chapter in British history, enriched by the cultural contributions of the Windrush Generation in rebuilding post-war Britain and beyond.
Windrush Day is not only a celebration of history but a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural vibrancy that the Windrush Generation and their descendants have brought to the UK. Recognising this day is vital as it fosters understanding and appreciation of everyone that lives in the Borough; Telford and Wrekin is home to many people from the Windrush Generation and it is important that their heritage is recognised, included and celebrated amongst all the other experiences and people in the community.
This year’s theme, ‘Satideh Soup’, resonates deeply with the Caribbean tradition of community and togetherness. Historically, ‘Satideh Soup’ was a cherished Saturday tradition in Caribbean households, where family and friends gathered around a pot of chicken, beef, pea, or vegetable soup, sharing stories from ‘back home’ and strengthening community bonds on the weekend. This tradition underscores the importance of community cohesion and cultural heritage.
To recognise this significance, on 21 June, from 12-4pm, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, a heritage conservation and education charity, is hosting a ‘Satdeh Soup’ event in the Covered Bays (next to at Enginuity in Coalbrookdale). Here, attendees can see displays about the Windrush Generation, enjoy cultural performances, and partake in the communal dining of traditional soup with a nominal charge of £5 per bowl of soup provided by Lola’s Kitchen.
The celebrations culminate on Windrush Day itself, 22 June, at the TAARC Summer House Community Garden, off Summer House Drive, Hadley, TF1 6JN, for a garden party 12-3pm. This vibrant event promises a delightful array of Caribbean and Asian cuisines, children’s entertainment featuring a bouncy castle, garden games and an ice cream vendor, ensuring fun for all ages.
The Council invites everyone to bring their family and friends to these intergenerational events to connect, learn and inspire one another.
