To celebrate Black History month, on Thursday 30 October the New Vic welcome writer and performer Gerel Falconer with Tones - a Hip Hop Opera - a unique piece of gig theatre that explores the black and the mixed British experience.
Produced by Wound Up Theatre and performed by award-winning actor, writer, and Rapaturg Gerel Falconer, Tones combines the melodramatic sounds of Opera, Classical music, Hip Hop, and Grime to tell a story about class, culture, and belonging.
Audiences can expect to be kept on beat, as the black lived experience is laid bare, told through the eyes of a young character Jerome AKA The Professor, and his upbringing from childhood to his departure from university. Coming of age as he navigates the societal pressures of who he is and who he’s perceived to be, including themes concerning race, class and identity, all underscored with an original soundtrack from producer 3D Williams.
Gerel Falconer’s passion for theatre and underground music, combined with his grassroots work empowering communities, will make this performance a raw, and an intentionally unique experience.
Gerel Falconer comments, “Tones is a show that's instinctively rhythmic and full of lyrical style. The story of Jerome will make you grimace and smile. From high passion grime clashing, to mixing with rich kids code-switching to fit in with lessening guile - Tones needs to be on now! I can tell you assuredly, as we all have moments of mass insecurity. We all battle who we are versus the person the world says we ought to be.”
Tickets are on sale now priced at £15.00. To book, or for more information, call the Box Office on 01782 717 962 or visit newvictheatre.org.uk.
