A series of striking new murals co-designed by Midlands schoolchildren and artist Luke Crump have gone on display at RAF Museum Midlands as part of the attraction’s major transformation programme.

Created in Luke’s distinctive black-and-white illustrative style, the large-scale artworks now cover the external hoardings surrounding redevelopment works at the Cosford site.

The first mural highlights the Museum’s planned new exhibition, featuring drawings of aircraft that will help tell the story of the Royal Air Force over the past 40 years and into the future. A second mural showcases a range of RAF artefacts, reflecting items that will eventually be moved from storage into a new Collections Hub, where they will be accessible to the public for the first time.

Students from St Mary’s CE Primary School in Albrighton, Marsh Hill Primary School in Birmingham, Haberdashers’ Castle House School in Telford and Moreton School in Wolverhampton helped shape the project through artist-led workshops inspired by objects from the Museum’s collection. Their colourful drawings and names have been incorporated throughout the finished designs.

Luke and several of the participating pupils returned to the museum in September to see the completed murals for the first time.

The artwork will remain on display throughout the museum’s Inspiring Everyone: RAF Museum Midlands Development Programme, which is due to be completed in 2028. The project has been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
