The Newcastle Lantern Parade from B Arts returns to Newcastle-under-Lyme to bring together the community and light up the town and shine a light on the theme of "Peace.”

The annual Newcastle Lantern Parade, established in 2013, is a testament to the community spirit that thrives in Newcastle, and it brings people of all ages and backgrounds together in the name of art and unity.  Following a month of public workshops, those who have created their own lanterns come together to parade through the streets of Newcastle town centre and illuminate the town accompanied by live music.

The theme of "Peace" for this year's parade will draw inspiration from two remarkable figures, Vera Britain and Janet Bloomfield, the parade highlights the importance of harmony and understanding. Vera Britain, a celebrated author and pacifist from the area, dedicated her life to advocating for peace, especially in the aftermath of World War I. Her legacy reminds us of the timeless importance of striving for a world without conflict. Janet Bloomfield, a prominent community leader, has tirelessly worked to bridge divides and promote cooperation within the local community, making her an inspiring symbol of peace and unity.

The Newcastle Lantern Parade will take place on Saturday 2 December starting at 4:30pm.

The parade will be accompanied by live music and will light up the town centre with the glow of handmade willow and tissue lanterns. In addition,Castle Artisan Market will set up a night market, offering a unique shopping experience, street food, and musical entertainment.

"We are thrilled to be able to work with the wonderful team at Barts and provide funding to help bring the lantern parade back to the town centre"says Charlotte Pearce, Manager of Newcastle-under-Lyme BID.

"The lantern parade is such a popular event but also brings opportunities for families to get involved in free workshops in the town throughout the month of November to learn a new skill.  It's a fantastic event that brings people together, and we’re thrilled to bring Castle Artisan Market on board this year to provide not only a visual treat but also a perfect opportunity for local artisans to showcase their unique creations.  This way we can create more of an event that enriches the overall experience for both participants and spectators."

Siobhan Mcaleer from BArts, the organisation behind the Newcastle Lantern Parade, emphasises the timeliness of this year's theme: "Peace is a concept that has never been more relevant than it is today. The Newcastle Lantern Parade is an opportunity for the community to come together, reflect on the importance of peace, and share a collective vision for a harmonious world."

Leading up to the parade, the community is invited to participate in open public workshops where they can learn about lantern making, create their own lanterns, and prepare for the parade.

Workshops are scheduled as follows:
