The heart of Stoke-on-Trent will come alive this September for a once-in-a-century celebration.
The “100 Years 100 Faces” weekend, taking place 13 - 14 September 2025, will honour a century of local history and heritage through a powerful new public mural.
Commissioned as part of the city’s centenary celebrations by Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, the upcoming mural pays tribute to 100 influential figures from the city’s past 100 years. From unsung heroes to well-known icons, these portraits reflect the people who shaped the Potteries and its proud legacy.
Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID Chairman, Jonathan Bellamy, said:
“This mural will be a bold, colourful celebration of all that is good and great about our city, its heritage, and the people who have helped to make it. I can’t wait for it to be shared with the people of this city. Do join us for a family friendly, party atmosphere in the city centre throughout the day, enjoy this unique piece of artwork, and feel proud together of our shared story.”
Saturday 13 September will see city-centre wide celebrations for all to get stuck in with, featuring a vibrant centenary themed artisan market featuring goods from local makers DJ stages playing music across Piccadilly, Fountain Square, and the artisan market area, a kids’ art area , historical walkaround characters representing collections of historical figures and the “100 Makers” event at the Potteries Centre.
The public will be able to view the completed artwork in its full scale for the first time the following day, Sunday 14 September, along with an accompanying trail map and commemorative book available to purchase later this year.
Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID Lead Director for Place Marketing, Paul Williams, noted the huge feat of work undertaken as part of the city’s centenary year:
"A fascinating journey through Stoke-on-Trent’s history over the past 100 years, this spectacular mural is a living tribute to the many wonderful people and the part they each played in shaping our city across the decades. Each of the nominated faces have been cleverly depicted in a centenary legacy art installation by local artists Rob Fenton and Alastair Barnett to create a series of made in Stoke-on-Trent story arcs spanning the last century and looking ahead to the next.”
