I Can Shrewsbury is offering a FREE 8-week block of dance classes to cancer patients, starting Thursday 5 June at Eastern Community Centre in Oswestry.
Kindly funded by Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, the classes offer you the chance to access a fun, friendly and uplifting dance experience. Over 8 sessions, you will learn how to 'do' the Charleston and 'twist the lightbulb' in the Bollywood sessions.
The sessions are light-hearted and relaxed, and you will find the choreography easy to pick up and a joy to dance.
They are open to complete beginners and those with some dance experience - all levels of dancer are welcome. While the classes aim to increase activeness, expect a moderate pace of exercise - this means that your heart will beat a little faster as well as shine a little brighter.
Classes are open to anyone with a cancer diagnosis, whatever stage of your journey. As with any new exercise programme, please ensure that you have consulted with your medical professional if you are unsure about whether you are well enough to participate.
Charleston Dance (sessions 1-4)
Dance your way back to the roaring 20s and master the steps of the ever-popular Charleston! Dancing the Charleston is all about having fun, letting go and showing character. Expect to swing your arms, swivel your feet, slap your bottom, kick, flick and shimmy! It is without wonder that the Charleston was THE dance craze of the 1920s.
Bollywood (sessions 5-8)
Colourful, vibrant and expressive, Bollywood is a meeting of eastern and western dance styles that makes really exciting and eye-catching choreography. Choreography fuses energetic Bhangra steps with beautiful Indian hand gestures, as well as a peppering of western dance styles, namely Disco, Latino and Street dance.
During the 4 sessions of each dance style, I Can Dance will progressively build a routine from which you will feel the pleasure and satisfaction of mastering a piece of choreography.
Sessions 1-4: Thursday 5 June - Thursday 26 June 2025: 11am-12pm (1 hour class)
Session 5-8: Thursday 3 July - Thursday 24 July 2025: 11am-12pm (1 hour class)
