Seventeen years after giving its first performance under the name Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra at the CBSO Centre, the LGBT orchestra of the Midlands returns to the venue on Saturday 18 July with a powerful programme of Dvořák and Brahms.
The ensemble’s first performance under the name BGSO was at the CBSO Centre in 2009. They last performed at the venue in December 2022 with a sold-out concert and today the orchestra comprises over 25 core members from across the Midlands.
The programme on 18 July features a first half of Brahms’ Tragic Overture, Op. 81, and Dvořák’s Symphonic Variations, Op. 78, giving the orchestra a chance to showcase its versatility across the 27 variations. In the second half, BGSO will explore Brahms’ Symphony No. 1. From its tense opening to its triumphant finale, this symphony is a cornerstone of orchestral repertoire for good reason.
Musical director Neavan Lobban, who will conduct the concert, said: “This concert is pure Romance. Brahms and Dvořák - what a summer treat! Brahms’s First will be a real highlight, as well as being BGSO’s first performance of a Brahms symphony. A romantic masterpiece 21 years in the making, this one is not to be missed!”
This concert demonstrates BGSO’s continuing commitment to celebrate and showcase the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community through ambitious orchestral performance.
Tickets cost £12 in advance and £15 on the door. Consessions, family tickets and student discounts are also available.
