New Vic Theatre’s Chair of the Board of Trustees, Bryan Carnes MBE, has announced he will be standing down from the role at the end of 2026, concluding almost 25 years of dedicated service to the theatre, in a year that marks the theatre’s 40th anniversary.
After joining the Board as a Trustee in May 2001, Bryan was appointed Chair in September 2015, providing leadership, strategic vision, and an unwavering commitment to the theatre’s mission over the course of the past two decades. He has played a pivotal role in guiding the New Vic through significant milestones, including a major capital redevelopment in 2020, which refurbished the theatre’s auditorium for the first time since its opening in 1986.
This milestone year offers a fitting moment to recognise both the theatre’s four decades of creative achievement and Bryan’s lasting contribution to its growth and success. Under his leadership, the theatre has strengthened its position as a vital cultural institution in Staffordshire, expanding its artistic reach and deepening its engagement with audiences and communities.
Theresa Heskins, Artistic Director and Fiona Wallace, Managing Director at the New Vic said: “On behalf of everyone at the New Vic we want to say how incredibly grateful we are for the time, care and commitment that Bryan has given to the theatre as Chair of our Board of Trustees.
He has brought not just wisdom and guidance, but a genuine love of theatre and of the particular magic of making work here at the New Vic. He understands what it means to create theatre in-the-round, and has always championed the craft, the people and the spirit that make this place so special. His support for the company - on and off stage - has been constant, thoughtful and deeply felt. It has been a pleasure to work alongside him, and we thank him for everything he has given and continues to give to the New Vic.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Bryan Carnes said: “It has been a privilege and a joy to be involved with the super-talented people at the New Vic. There have been so many highlights during my stint as Chair, such as seeing a New Vic production on stage in New York, the introduction of circus skills to the Theatre’s repertoire, and the refurbishment of the auditorium.”
The Board of Trustees will begin the process of appointing a successor in due course.
