Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses in Staffordshire are taking centre stage in the latest series of Hidden Treasures of the National Trust, as the popular BBC Arts programme returns to explore the stories and conservation work behind some of the UK's most remarkable historic sites.
Now available on BBC iPlayer, the episode shines a spotlight on Kinver Edge, where a unique row of homes carved into sandstone rock remained occupied by local families until the 1960s.
Viewers are given behind-the-scenes access to an ambitious conservation project that sees National Trust teams install a salvaged historic range inside one of the Rock Houses. The restoration helps recreate the heart of the former working-class home while preserving the stories of the generations who lived there.
The programme also highlights ongoing efforts to protect the rare heathland habitat that stretches along the sandstone ridge at Kinver Edge. The landscape supports important wildlife and represents one of the Midlands' last remaining areas of lowland heath.
Focusing on the lives of ordinary people and the dedication of those who care for historic places, the episode showcases the work of National Trust staff, volunteers and specialist conservators committed to safeguarding heritage for future generations.
Claire Hale, Visitor Experience Manager at Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses, said: "We're thrilled that Kinver Edge is featuring in this series. The Rock Houses are unlike anywhere else in the country and the programme beautifully captures both their unique history and the work taking place to care for them and the surrounding landscape.
"We hope viewers will enjoy discovering more about the people who lived here and be inspired to visit and explore Kinver Edge for themselves."
Among the last surviving cave dwellings in Britain, the Rock Houses have been carefully restored to reflect Victorian-era life. Today, visitors can explore the restored homes, woodland walks and heathland trails that make Kinver Edge one of the region's most distinctive heritage destinations.
Hidden Treasures of the National Trust airs on BBC Two on Friday, 12 June, at 9pm and is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
