A monumental figure in a hospital bed is the centrepiece of Jason Wilsher-Mills’ major solo exhibition, a show in which the artist explores the transformative experience of becoming disabled as a child. Paralysed from the neck down until he was 16 - by an autoimmune condition triggered when he contracted chickenpox at the age of 11 - Jason was unable to physically explore the wider world around him. Instead, he came to inhabit an interior world, one which was filled with action heroes, TV shows, films, comics, books and his own imagination... The exhibition has been commissioned by the Wellcome Collection, a free London-located museum and library dedicated to exploring the past, present and future of health.
