Created by a team of people seeking refuge who are living locally, and led by Leamington-based artist, Libby Esler, the Threads of Courage quilt has been unveiled and is now on display at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum as part of Refugee Week celebrations.

Attended by Leamington Spa Mayor, Councillor Sarah Boad, the unveiling was launched after three months of creative workshops, shared experiences, conversations, stitching and printing by a group of men seeking refuge and asylum locally.

Supported by various teams including National Education Union, Equip, Refugee Week, Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum and Warwick District Council, the project has played a key role in Refugee Week’s national them of “Courage” with events and actions that focus on community connection, empathy, and storytelling. The official UK Refugee Week organisation supports the county-wide celebrations and provides various resources for local community groups aiding the concept that every story deserves to be seen and heard.

The Threads of Courage quilt will be on display at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum until September before being transferred to Warwick as part of the exhibition archives. Refugee Week runs nationally from 15 – 23 June with local art competitions and exhibitions focused on community strength and welcoming those seeking sanctuary
