A three-time Grammy Award winning blues and roots artist who has collaborated with Sting and shared a stage with Bruce Springsteen has been announced for this summer’s Shrewsbury Folk Festival.

Fantastic Negrito will join the line-up on Sunday 30 August, following the withdrawal of Americana star Lucinda Williams who announced she was cancelling all her UK and EU shows last month.

The inaugural winner of the NPR Tiny Desk Contest, Fantastic Negrito is renowned for his explosive live shows and his raw, deeply personal blend of blues, rock, soul and funk. He has won three Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album and performed at some of the world’s top music festivals including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Celtic Connections and WOMAD.

The festival’s stellar line-up already includes the UK premiere of a new show from Scottish stars Talisk and Irish dance world champions, former Riverdance leads and social media sensations, The Gardiner Brothers called Unleashed; Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders; Irish singer Cara Dillon and the only festival show from Ferocious Dog featuring The Celtic Folk Orchestra as well as dozens of other folk, Americana and world music acts.

The festival, which is widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading folk events, is based on the riverside DMOS People West Mid Showground and runs over the August Bank Holiday weekend from August 28 to 31.

As well as four music stages, the festival has a thriving dance tent that hosts everything from ceilidhs, bals and contra dances to shows and displays from morris and dance sides.

There’s also a packed programme of participation for all ages including crafting, yoga and Pilates, songwriting, shanty singing, folklore talks, expert-led musical workshops, walks, a festival choir and music and song sessions. Children and young people can join in with a huge range of activities in their own dedicated venues.

In addition, there are craft and music fairs, six real ale, wine and cocktail bars, a diverse food village offering street food from across the world, a festival shop and camping and glamping options for those staying on-site.

Day and weekend tickets are on sale at shrewsburyfolkfestival.co.uk with weekend camping tickets already 80 per cent sold out.
