Reimagining the spirit of the Baroque trio sonata for our times
At the heart of The Alchemist, The Devil and The Dream lies a dialogue between past and present: the virtuosity and drama of Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata, the elegance of Corelli’s La Folia, and the vivid scene-painting of Biber’s Sonata Representativa are set alongside original works by jazz pianist and composer David Gordon and violinist David Le Page, including Bebop Tango and The Alchemist and the Catflap.
Drawing on jazz, folk and Balkan influences as well as free improvisation, this performance, featuring violin, cello and piano, celebrates the shared creative energy that unites Baroque musicians and contemporary improvisers. The result is a concert of striking contrasts and unexpected connections - by turns expressive, playful and unpredictable - where centuries of musical tradition meet in a spirit of invention and discover.
