Young people in Coventry have one final chance to star in an award-winning portrait photography exhibition when it arrives this weekend.
The acclaimed Saturday Town project by photographer Casey Orr will open at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum on Saturday, March 7.
It will feature over 100 photos of the evolving identities of young people across the UK in a celebration of youth style, fashion and self-expression - including portraits of young Coventrians who have posed at pop-up shoots across the city.
After two sessions at FarGo Village, capturing the style and individuality of young people from across the city, a final shoot will take place at the Herbert to mark the exhibition’s opening - offering a last chance for local young people to step in front of the camera and potentially see their portrait go on display as part of the project.
American-born photographer Casey Orr has lived in the UK for more than 25 years. Since 2013, she has travelled to towns and cities across the country on Saturday afternoons, setting up pop-up studios to photograph young people and capture the spirit of youth culture in public spaces.
The project has worked with hundreds of participants, recording major shifts in fashion, identity, diversity and how young people use and shape their environments.
Selected photographs from across the three Coventry shoots will be included in the exhibition from Saturday 28 March, ensuring the city’s young people become part of the Saturday Town project’s evolving portrait archive.
The final pop-up shoot will be overseen by Casey and supported by student volunteers from Coventry University. Participants do not need modelling experience - only a willingness to express themselves through their style and identity.
Casey said: “I love finding out about places by meeting the young people who live there. Coventry has a rich history of youth culture; constantly changing and evolving to reflect each generation. I’m here to find out how this city expresses itself, through the playful language of 2026 style.”
Marguerite Nugent, Director of Culture at CV Life, which operates the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, said: “We are delighted to bring Saturday Town to Coventry and to give our city’s young people the opportunity to be part of this nationally celebrated project.
“The Herbert has always championed creativity, identity and community, and this exhibition perfectly captures the energy, individuality and diversity of youth culture at various times and locations – and we’re excited to see what Coventry has brought to the table.
“With two fantastic shoots already completed, we are now encouraging young people to take part in the final session on launch day.
“It’s a rare chance to have your portrait featured in a major gallery exhibition and to become part of a project that documents a defining moment in youth culture.”
Casey Orr has exhibited widely in both the UK and the US, including at the National Portrait Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Palace of Westminster.
Her previous project Saturday Girl won the Format Photography Festival Award in 2019, and Saturday Town culminated in a major exhibition at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, in 2024.
