The Belgrade Theatre is proud to host Coventry Puppet Festival, presented in association with the British Puppetry Guild on Tuesday 29 July, to celebrate 100 years of British puppetry. Step into a world of wonder and world-class puppetry as Coventry Puppet Festival takes over the Belgrade for a full day of celebration marking 100 years of the British Puppet Guild.
This family-friendly festival brings puppetry to life throughout the theatre with live performances, hands-on workshops, talks, and variety acts that showcase the magic, history, and humour of British puppetry. From classics like Sooty and Zippy, to newer faces like Hacker T Dog and Arthur Lager, there’s something for everyone.
Highlights of the day include:
The Sooty Show: Join Sooty, Sweep and Soo in a laugh-out-loud, magical show for children and grown-ups alike.
A Night of Variety Like No Other: A dazzling evening of puppetry performance celebrating iconic characters, hosted by some of the best in the business.
Although you are still required book tickets, many of the events listed are free of charge to make them accessible to as many people as possible.

Magician Alec Powell said “The British Puppet Guild, the oldest puppetry organisation in the world, celebrates its centenary this year. Whilst there are a number of events during the year, our flagship event will be a puppet festival which we are delighted to say will be at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. The theatre has allowed us to access all areas, and we have exhibitions, workshops and several shows all under one roof. Due to the enthusiastic support of everyone at the Belgrade, for which we are very grateful, there will be something for all ages during the day and evening, much of it free of charge.”
Artistic Director Corey Campbell said: “We’re honoured to host the Coventry Puppet Festival and to mark this incredible milestone for the British Puppet Guild. With the rise of shows such as Bluey and stage shows like War Horse, puppetry has been a focal part of the theatre and entertainment landscape for a long time and we’re excited to see where it goes next. This festival is a true celebration of creativity, tradition and fun and there really is something for everyone.”
