The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) have three permanent theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon: the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre, which both share a building on Waterside, and The Other Place, which is a short walk away on Southern Lane.

Each venue hosts home-grown internationally-renowned productions, and welcomes thousands of visitors each season. Follow the links below to find out more about each venue's upcoming productions...

Royal Shakespeare Theatre

The home of the Royal Shakespeare Company was originally opened in 1932 as the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, being renamed the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1961. Along with the adjacent Swan Theatre, the building underwent a multi-million pound transformation project in the early 21st century, reopening with a new thrust-stage auditorium containing more than 1,000 seats.

The RSC's largest Stratford-upon-Avon venue sits on Waterside, alongside the River Avon, and primarily stages the plays of Shakespeare.

The Swan

Built adjacent to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan opened with a production of The Two Noble Kinsmen in May 1986. Also redeveloped in the early 2000s, and reopening in 2010, the theatre features a deep thrust stage, and a galleried auditorium holding around four hundred-and-fifty people. Since the transformation project, it’s been linked to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre by a new colonnade.

At The Swan, audiences can expect to see plays outside of Shakespeare's canon, with much of the programme including boundary-pushing productions, viewed at close quarters in the intimite venue.
