Coventry Transport Museum’s Vintage Sleigh Ride is one of Coventry’s most cherished Christmas traditions, dating back to 1956 when it was first installed at the Co-op on Corporation Street.

It’s now thought to be one of the last working mechanical sleigh rides of its kind in the country, having been part of the city’s festive calendar for nearly 70 years.

With rides once dotted at Co-ops all over the country, the Vintage Sleigh Ride has become a nationwide nostalgia trip, with millions of children through the decades visiting their local Co-Op to experience the magic.

Thousands visit every year, with many travelling from across the UK for the festive experience, which sells out annually.

The sleigh has been based at Coventry Transport Museum since 2015, after a public campaign helped save it when the city’s Co-op closed.

As well as the classic sleigh ride, families can now enjoy the North Pole Trail. The Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry Transport Museum and The Wave Waterpark will each host a unique “North Pole portal”. Families who collect a stamp at all three can return their completed trail postcard to the Transport Museum and receive a special festive prize.
