The renowned English Symphony Orchestra (ESO), under their principal conductor Kenneth Woods, is to make a highly anticipated return to Malvern Theatres with a rollicking programme celebrating the adventurous spirit of the 1920s, as part of their new season of concerts at the venue.
Erwin Schulhoff’s Suite for Chamber Orchestra takes inspiration from the 20s dance crazes, from the Shimmy to the Tango. Darius Milhaud’s foot-tapping ballet score ‘The Ox on the Roof’ was inspired by the comedy of Charlie Chaplin and the dance music of Brazil, while Kurt Weill’s songs reflect life in and around the cabaret scene in all its humour and sensuality and features a welcome return for soprano, April Fredrick.
The programme opens with Haydn’s Symphony No. 60 ‘The Absent-Minded Gentleman’ - a work that delights in the composer’s celebrated lively wit and humour.
The Worcestershire-based ESO, the International Orchestra of Elgar Country, is an ensemble which in recent years has become synonymous with artistic excellence, innovative and visionary programming.
Forthcoming concerts, as part of the 2025-26 season at Malvern Theatres, include a programme of Classical favourites by Beethoven and Mozart on 19 February, followed by an evening of Romantic lyricism featuring works by Dvořák, Tchaikovsky and Brahms on 19 March.
