Local Voices, Creative Choices, an ambitious programme led by eight city partners aimed at growing the cultural life of Worcester, is reflecting on a successful first year.

Through the combined efforts of Severn Arts, Scala, Worcester Mela, University of Worcester, Heart of Worcestershire College, Worcester Community Trust, Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council, Worcester has enjoyed three new festivals: Bridges of Light by Severn Arts, Scala Festival of Play and Worcester Mela’s Threads of Unity.

Over 2800 local people were involved in co-creating creative elements of the festivals. 90+ installations, performances and activities took place, providing work for 142 creatives. Research suggests that this work has increased feelings of togetherness, confidence and joy in the people involved. Over 90% of visitors want to attend another festival or event.

In addition, over 140 students from the University of Worcester and Heart of Worcestershire College have benefitted from a skills development programme, with access to professionals and learning opportunities right here in the city building skills for future employment.

Commenting on the initiatives success, Elaine Knight - Programme Director for the Local Voices, Creative Choices partnership said: “The programme has, in its first year, brought together Worcester’s communities to celebrate and co-create creating a strong sense of local pride and renewed positivity as well as delivering a festival programme that appeals to different ages and communities. “

“We are also particularly pleased to see the positive impact the programme is having on Worcester’s creative sector through supporting emerging creatives building their confidence and skills for the future.”

There’s still more to come, as Bridges of Light by Severn Arts, Scala Festival of Play and Worcester Mela’s Threads of Unity are all set to return and there are plans to provide further opportunities for students during the next academic year.
