Residents and visitors are being encouraged to grow their best Sir Edward Elgar-inspired moustaches this November as part of a new challenge celebrating the Worcestershire composer’s upcoming 170th anniversary.

Visit Worcestershire and the National Trust’s The Firs, Elgar’s birthplace in Lower Broadheath, have launched the Elgar ‘Tache Challenge, inviting people to channel the composer’s distinctive facial hair throughout Movember.

The initiative forms part of preparations for the 170th anniversary of Elgar’s birth in 2027, when a programme of events and activities will celebrate his life, music and legacy.

The challenge will culminate on Sunday 29 November, when The Firs will host a special celebration during its final public opening of the year, ahead of its booked Father Christmas programme.

Visitors sporting an Elgar-inspired moustache will receive free entry to the attraction, with a barber on hand to offer trims and styling advice. There will also be music, special activities and moustache-themed biscuits served by Little Al’s Kitchen.

Ellen Cooper, Site Manager at National Trust, The Firs, said: “We're delighted to be partnering with Visit Worcestershire on the Elgar 'Tache Challenge. Elgar's famous moustache is one of his most recognisable features, making it the perfect way to celebrate his legacy while building excitement for his 170th anniversary year in 2027.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors to The Firs on 29 November for a fun day of music, activities and, of course, some impressive Elgar-inspired moustaches.”

Residents are also encouraged to share photographs of their moustache-growing progress on social media throughout November using the hashtag #ElgarTacheChallenge.
