The New Vic Theatre is continuing its 40th anniversary celebrations with the launch of 40 Stories at 40, a new community storytelling programme bringing free storytelling sessions to libraries and community venues across Staffordshire.

The milestone year will also feature a special anniversary exhibition and an invitation for audiences to share their favourite memories of the theatre.

Created by the New Vic’s Education Team, 40 Stories at 40 celebrates the power of storytelling to inspire young imaginations. Running over the next six months, the free programme will take place at the theatre as well as in libraries and community spaces across the region. Designed for young children and their families, each session combines storytelling, gentle adventure and sensory-rich play, encouraging children to explore stories in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment. The first events will take place in Staffordshire libraries between 3 and 7 July.

Visitors to the theatre throughout the summer can also enjoy a new 40th Anniversary Exhibition in the Front of House area. The exhibition showcases iconic props, photographs and memorabilia from productions staged in the theatre’s unique in-the-round auditorium over the past four decades. Featured productions include Astley’s Astounding Adventures, The Nutcracker and The Company of Wolves, highlighting the creativity and achievements of both on-stage and behind-the-scenes teams throughout the theatre’s history.

As part of the celebrations, audiences are being invited to share their favourite New Vic memories by signing a guest book either at the theatre or online. From cherished family traditions and first visits to unforgettable productions, the initiative aims to create a lasting record of the important role the theatre has played in the lives of local people since opening in 1986.

New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins said:

“Over the last 40 years, the New Vic has shared stories, inspired ideas and created unforgettable moments with our community in our iconic in-the-round theatre. Through our 40 Stories at 40 programme, we are continuing that tradition by introducing a new generation of young audiences to the magic of storytelling. We hope these sessions will spark a lifelong love of theatre and encourage families to become part of the New Vic community for years to come. We look forward to welcoming both new and returning audiences as our anniversary celebrations continue.”

The celebrations will continue into the autumn with a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, starring Russell Kane and Natalie Casey, followed by the return of one of the New Vic’s most popular festive productions, The Borrowers.

Alongside the anniversary programme, the theatre has also launched a 40th Anniversary Appeal, with a goal of raising £40,000 to support its work with children and young people for future generations.
