A popular sculpture in the shape of a dog has been transformed into a magnificent masterpiece after its restoration in Upton upon Severn.

The dog sculpture, named Cromwell, is located in the grounds of Upton’s iconic Pepperpot, and was purchased by Upton Town Council in 2012 for Upton in Bloom.

Originally a horticultural feature with a long grass coat, Cromwell was appearing well-worn after 13 years, and has now been transformed into a masterpiece made of sustainable Somerset willow.

The project has been part funded by Malvern Hills District Council and Cllr Martin Allen’s budget from Worcestershire County Council.

The sculpture was brought back to life by Cheltenham based willow artist Chris Oakey, where willow was used to weave in and around its metal armature frame.

Cromwell was named after the Parliamentarian leader Oliver Cromwell, who visited Upton after his forces, under the command of General Fleetwood, were victorious in the historical Battle of Upton, fought in 1651. There is a blue plaque commemorating his visit in Church Street, Upton.

Councillor Martin Allen, Ward Member for Upton, at Malvern Hills District Council said: “We are so pleased to have been able to support this great project, Cromwell is an important feature in the town and a local icon, it’s also very popular with visitors. We encourage residents and visitors to go and have a look at the beautiful sculpture.”

Chris Oakey, Sculptor and Company Owner of Oakey Bear said: “When I first visited Upton to look at the project I realised how important Cromwell was to the town and felt honoured to be entrusted with helping him on the next part of his journey”

Ali Bassett, from Upton in Bloom said: “We are delighted that Victoria and Martin were able to support Cromwell’s restoration. Chris and Ruth from ‘Oakey Bear’ have used their craftsmanship to create a sculpture that is true to Cromwell’s original character and he will now continue to watch over Upton from his vantage point on the Old Church Yard for many years to come”.
