Cheese on toast has officially made history. After revealing Brits have been doing it all wrong, Lea & Perrins has preserved the perfect slice of cheese on toast in Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum.
For 190 years, cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce has been a British favourite, but according to new research from Lea & Perrins, over a third (34%) are missing out on maximum flavour by putting their sauce on top of the cheese, where it simply slides off.
The secret? The Lea & Perrins belongs under the cheese, directly on the toast, where it caramelises and soaks into the bread for that rich umami kick. It’s the onLEA way to transform the simple savoury snack into a full-blown flavour bomb.
To right this national wrong, the iconic condiment makers have gone back to the sauce, officially preserving a slice of Lea & Perrins cheese on toast, made the 'onLEA' way, in the sauce maker’s hometown of Worcester, at the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, ensuring the correct method goes down in history.
Housed as part of the Lea & Perrins archive collection, the comfort food classic has been immortalised in clay and resin, and will be on display at the museum for locals and foodie fans alike to view for free.
Alongside the display, Lea & Perrins has released limited-edition bottles featuring a bold new label to remind Brits of the 'onLEA' way to make your cheese on toast. These special bottles are available exclusively at The Guildhall Worcester shop while stocks last.
Thiago Rapp, Director of Taste Elevation at Lea & Perrins said: “Cheese on toast is a part of our national DNA and for generations, a splash of Lea & Perrins has been the secret to making it truly great. So, when we realised Brits didn’t know about this hack to making the best cheese on toast, we had to take action. By preserving a slice in the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, we’re making sure future generations know the 'onLEA' way to make delicious Lea & Perrins cheese on toast. No more sauce slip ‘n slides, just delicious, flavourful food.”
Helen Large, Museum Audience Manager at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum said: “Lea & Perrins has always been at the heart of Worcester, and the Lea & Perrins collection is one of our most loved displays. Adding the nation’s favourite cheese on toast couldn’t be more fitting.”
The Lea & Perrins Cheese on Toast display can be seen at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum from Tuesday 23 September 2025 for a limited time, and the limited-edition bottles are available to buy from The Tourist Information Centre at Worcester’s Guildhall, from 15 Monday September while stocks last (RRP £2.50).
