Visitors are invited to celebrate the life and work of Sir James Thornhill on the 350th anniversary of his birth in a special exhibition, Happy Birthday Mr Thornhill opening at Hanbury Hall on Saturday 7 June.
James Thornhill was the artist commissioned by Thomas Vernon in 1701 to create the magnificent wall and ceiling paintings that adorn Hanbury Hall. Without Thornhill’s work, the Hall might not have survived the centuries, as the paintings gave it the status and significance that saved it from the fate of many other country houses.
In the exhibition, visitors will be able to discover how Thornhill grew from a greengrocer’s son to a knighted artist, and how his masterpiece was carefully constructed over a decade. They will also be able to uncover the scenes from Greek mythology depicted in the paintings which comment on political satire of the day.
Happy Birthday Mr Thornhill will feature a new pamphlet, displays and interpretation, and special talks led by knowledgeable volunteers. Visitors are invited to join in the party atmosphere inside the Hall which will be decorated with streamers; party music will be playing and there will be a party table in the Dining Room.
Michelle Hill, Collections & House Manager, says: "We’re excited to be throwing a birthday party to celebrate influential English baroque artist Sir James Thornhill. Without Thornhill, Hanbury Hall probably wouldn’t be here today, so this exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on his life and work. There will be lots of ways for visitors to get involved in the celebrations, including writing Thornhill a birthday message, and sharing their favourite party memories."
Happy Birthday Mr Thornhill will be open to visitors from Saturday 7 June and will continue throughout the summer. The Hall opening hours are from 10am - 4pm daily, with last entries at 3.45pm.
